The Annals of Irony – Flaming Star Lounge – Thrilling Hot Spot

If you spend a lot of time driving around this country you see a lot of things – interesting things. All too often these things rise up quickly and then fade in the distance – momentary glimpses – lost in the blur of landscape at 55mph. Now and then I would stop. I stopped at the shrine of charred rubble that was the Flaming Star Lounge. Apparently it had gone super nova, and in that last, glorious burst of razzle-dazzle, gave all that was left to give. Alas, no more Pabst, no more peeling out in the gravel parking lot, no more jukebox, no more Texas two step. Yes, the Flaming Star had fallen, as Lucifer fell – in flame. I breathed in the heavy air, embraced the silence, and determined to insure that the Flaming Star Lounge live on. Click.

Jingle Bell Run today

“I will be there with bells on.” I have not been keeping up with my exercise routine and have backslid into my former slovenly lifestyle. My goal of 180 is now at least 10 pounds further away. I have run only once in weeks. It is going to be awful today. But still, I think I will be all right – after all – it only lasts a half hour. Jeff and Tom will be running, and for the first time in years, Marie will be spectating only.

I wanna be a college kid sometimes.

Stayed up late on a school night. Who do I think I am – some kind of college kid?

Best to not take the thought farther. Tomorrow (today) is another day.

I love Saturday

I can get up early and start poking around and playing with my toys. Today I wrote up last night’s visit to my Mom  and all my thoughts around that. Yikes. And then my thoughts turn to blue pieces.

So, in the name of “out of the blue” here is a pic of my man.

Enders on Top

I just typed a description of some length into that picture post, but don’t see any evidence of it. Hmmm.

It is cross country banquet weekend. Don’t know what the banquet will be like other than the certainty it will not be the same. There is nothing like a Huckle presentation of the team. Still, I am looking forward to seeing the kids, and know it will be a big deal for many of them.

Cross country 2010 pictures

Everybody gets a stack.

We’ve sorted the pictures and  are ready to bag ’em for distribution. It was a less prolific year than in past years – not sure why – I think it was camera performance more than anything. The A100 just wasn’t cutting it – the autofocus couldn’t keep up, and I wonder if the anti-blur was just making everything soft. Exposures were bad na de overall results were disappointing more often than not.

But hey – I am armed with a new camera, and it is truly the BOMB! So Melanie’s senior year – should she choose to run (and I hope she does) will be the most awesome of all!

Loneliness of the Mattress salesman

We were driving on Ridge Road or some long, retail strip. It was late at night. It was kind of bad weather. We passed a mattress store. The place was lit up like a night game – it had huge windows – nothing but windows – to showcase the inventory. Inside was a field of beds, nothing but beds from end to end, front to back. Up in front, near the center, sitting stock still like a statue – was the lone salesman. Sitting on the bed like a travelling salesman who just checked into a hotel room – lonely, dejected, empty, far from home. There wasn’t another soul in the store. I wanted to howl – to let out a long wail in solidarity for this guy – all I could imagine – from my brief glimpse as the car zoomed past him – was that he deserved a break. There he was, trying to make a living. Not a soul in his store. I knew he had to be hurting. I knew business could not be booming, I knew it was not just a fluke – that this was his night, night after night.

The image seared itself into my brain – it was a great moment – not because it was cool, but because it meant something deep and dark and painful. It symbolized our fragile state. It crystallized our need for one another.

I think of that scene, of that salesman, and know that there are many people hoping for better days. But better days or not, we have to make the best of what we’ve got.

Thinking of Sgt. York

Ripped off from a different blog. I am recycling my stupid blogs.

His Mom was stoic. His sister was stoic. His brother was stoic. He was stoic. They were stoic. His girlfriend was loyal and friendly and happy. She was stoic, but she was a more fun flavor of stoic. I wasn’t sure why he turned down riches, but accepted the house.

Grandma was good. She was practical and smart and honest. Most people were in her day. I think they loved her and tried to hang on to her at Forest Lawn. That must be where old Ember is. I wonder if she made it there too – probably did. I think Uncle Jim brought her there.

Look at her jet black hair. She dyed it. Her hair went white. Her husband was driving it there even in this age. It was worst for her at this time I’d guess. The old man couldn’t stop drinking. Legend has it that he broke her arm once. He certainly shut down their lives – couldn’t make evening plans. She was a dancer in their youth – she her girlfriends would go where the big bands played – they danced the night away.

Lots of dance steps lost. She didn’t bitch and moan. She just did her own thing. Golf, bowling, bridge. She did everything that needed doing. I really loved her.

Kelly and Chase

This is lifted from an ill-fated blog stored elsewhere.

They were an item for a few years I guess. Time lasted longer back then. I think this must have been in the early 80s. Guessing they had split from Washington and moved south to Sarasota. Not sure why. I was reintroduced to sushi there – at the Kyoto. I think the way it worked – Chase wanted to go south. They did – then he split. Kelly stayed.

Back in the D.C. days, he put up with me – not too pleased or too impressed. I was an asshole. Admittedly. I was untouchable though. My sister saw to that. I figured I could show up at her place (their place) at any time and hang out as long as I wanted. That’s how it went down too.

I don’t remember much about Chase. I think he didn’t like my choice in wine (it was certainly terrible). I figured he didn’t know squat – after all it came from Italy and cost me $4 and had a cork. Wonder what he’s doing now. I think he and Kelly made a connection not too long ago. Wow. Entire lives lived. Lots of water under that bridge.

The Stately Squirrel

This guy had a wise old look – grey-haired squirrel. He was full of energy, so I figured he wasn’t grey because he was old. Not albino either. Just a little more interesting than most of the other rodents running around the back yard. (Is rodent a bigoted derogatory for squirrel?)

A sort of a distinguished looking squirrel.

The college boy came home for a night.

It was great to see Jeff and Mel hanging out with Cocalkensteins.  We dined together, then went our separate ways… But not before Allia set us up with a couple off DVDs we could watch so we didn’t feel too abandoned. “500 Days of Summer” was worthy of a little discussion.

The geologist college kid.

We ended up making a deal with Jeff – we’d give him a ride back to to Geneseo on his preferred schedule. We (the parents) considered it a win-win – Jeff got back and was happy, and we had 35 minutes of uninterrupted contact time with our boy!

Meantime, Melanie and friends went to Paranormal Activity 2 and got sort of freaked out. We got home at 10pm and walked the dogs, and as a result of the movie Melanie kept hearing noises. I figured if the end was near because some disgruntled ghoul was stalking us that it had been a good life and I had no regrets. Melanie, on the other hand, was not so resigned – she had her whole life in front of her and did not want to die. Fortunately, we were just walking around the neighborhood in Brighton, under the waxing moon, where ghouls don’t go, and where we couldn’t have been safer.

We made it home. I celebrated with a beer and a tunafish-with-buffalo-wing-sauce sandwich on toast. It was awesome.

Mail, Snail and E

Marie’s Mom sent us letter – it arrived today and opened with an acknowledgement of the email we had sent. She informed us that she’d be able to make a reply when she got to the library later in the week. I couldn’t help but reflect on how she used the postal mail to inform us of when she would be able to send us an email.

I wonder whether that is the first time that this has ever happened – it is tantamount to “Man bites dog.”

Make no mistake – we love all her mail – Snail or E!
